Here are a few things parents can do before the start of a baby photography session. First, have the newborn cleaned with a sponge bath prior to the shoot. This helps in removing any dry and loose skin the baby may have. Secondly, try to keep the baby awake and unfed 1-2 hours prior to the shoot. I will ask you to feed and change the baby once I arrive. If the baby is nursing you may want to eat a bland diet 1-2 days prior to the shoot as certain foods the mother eats can cause the baby to become gassy and fussy. Please check with your doctor first. The other two success factors are having adequate light and decluttering the background. I know parents are tired and cleaning is impossible - but kleenex boxes, empty glasses, breast pumps, newspapers, etc. should be removed. I recommend that the bedroom with the best light available have the bed made and be ready for family photographs. I will do a pre-consultation call with each client to go over concerns and assist with any inquiries about preparation for the session.
What To Wear
Make sure to pick out family outfits ahead of time and have them ready to change into when the session starts. I always suggest starting from a neutral palate. Your newborn should be the star of the show and bright colours or busy patterns can distract the viewer. Neutrals do not have to mean a plain white T-shirt. I consider neutrals as a palate of likeness (grey, navy, tan, white, ivory, soft blue, soft pink, etc.) The most important part is that the colours compliment one another and there are three - four colours (if including denim) MAX. Flowy clothing or clothing with texture that is comfortable is ideal. Women that have just given birth might not be feeling like the most beautiful versions of themselves (although they should). Fabric that moves and flows is a flattering option, especially when choosing whites and ivories for your colour choice.
Tip:
Avoid wearing black. While it is considered a "slimming" colour, it can be a harsh colour for lifestyle photography. My style of imagery is light and airy, so having dark clothing creates a moodier feel in the imagery. There is nothing wrong with the added emotion, just be conscious about this when you make your colour selections.
